Last night’s bloodless capture of the hill village of Suba, west of the city, “finally puts an end to the Arab dream of cutting the toad to Tel Aviv,” an Israeli Army spokesman announced here today. The Arab hill stronghold of Suba was taken by Palmach storm troops without combat, after a bombardment drove its defenders from their positions 500 feet above the vital road to Tel Aviv.
The first shelling by the Jews of Egyptian gun emplacements in Bethlehem, six miles south of Jerusalem, was reported today. The Jewish-held sections of Jerusalem were heavily shelled during the night. Last night, for the fourth consecutive night, commando squads crept close to the Arab-held Old City well near Jaffa gate and dynamited a block of buildings.
