Jews from all parts of Bulgaria are continuing to arrive in Sofia. They present a great problem to Jewish organizations here since the majority of them are penniless and in great need of aid.
The number of Jews in Sofia rose over the week-end to 15,000. In view of the approaching winter, their position is precarious. Many of them have no shoes and no clothing. Although the rainy season has already started, many Jewish homes in Sofia lack fuel, even firewood.
Jewish leaders believe that the economic position of the Jews in Bulgaria can be alleviated partly by establishing a cooperative bank to grant loans to artisans and small employers. The initial capital for such a bank must come from abroad. Jewish leaders expect the capital to come from Jewish relief groups in the United States. They also hope that the Joint Distribution Committee will send clothing, medical supplies, antiseptics and surgical instruments.
