Newspapers here reproduced today an order issued in Slovakia recently under which every Jew from 18 to 50 is obligated to register with the authorities for labor camps. Only rabbis and those deemed “irreplaceable in fulfilling their economic functions” were declared exempt. Failure to register was punishable by a fine of up to 60,000 kronen.
The Slovakian Propaganda Chief, Dr. Sano Mach, was quoted as stating that the Jews would be used mainly for building roads. Dr. Mach also was said to have announced that all Jewish enterprises in Slovakia would pass into Slovakian hands.
French newspapers today ridiculed German efforts to create the impression that Chancellor Adolf Hitler wants to establish a “Jewish state” in Poland. The Paris Midi terms the reported plan “another example of Hitler’s incoherence.”
