Several thousand Polish Jews who have been hiding in the woods along the Polish-Hungarian frontier recently succeeded in crossing into Hungary where they were placed in internment camps, Jewish organizations here learned today.
Scores of Polish Jews are still reaching Hungary daily, says the report, received from Jewish leaders in Hungary. They are not detained by the Hungarian border authorities when caught crossing the frontier illegally, but they must undergo a medical examination before being placed in a camp.
The Nazi Transocean News Agency today reported that the Hungarian Minister of Interior, speaking in the parliament, estimated that 3,100 Polish Jews have entered Hungary illegally. Of them 1,530 have been interned and the remainder have been sent back to their “original residences,” he said. He assured the parliament that “strong measures are being taken against illegal Jewish entries into the country.”
“The Government is doing its best to hasten the emigration of Jews from the country,” the Minister is reported to have stated, “but the number of Jews emigrating does not exceed fifty persons a month at present. It is to be hoped that the process of Jewish emigration from the country will be speeded up soon.”
