Canadians of Jewish origin form one of the major racial groups of Canada, says a statement released here by the Department of War Services, Citizenship Division. According to the 1941 census there were 170,241 Jews in the Dominion as compared with 156,726 in 1931, when the last census was taken.
Until 1901 the number of persons of Jewish origin in Canada was comparatively small. The Jewish population began to increase at the beginning of the twentieth century. In 1901 there were in Canada 16,131 persons of Jewish faith, in 1911-75,681; in 1921 – 126,196 and in 1931 – 156,726.
