A small number of Rumanian and Hungarian Jews reached Turkey last week and departed from there for Palestine after receiving Palestine visas in Istanbul, Dr. James Bernstein, European director of the Hias-Ica Emigration Association, informed Jewish organization here today in a cable from Lisbon. These are the first groups of Jews permitted to leave Rumania and Hungary for Palestine since those countries joined Germany in the war against the Allies.
Dr. Bernstein also confirmed that all the alien Jews – about 3,000 – who resided in Nice, on the French Riviera, were deported by the German authorities to an unknown destination about three weeks ago. Dr. Dernstein reported that an aver age of sixty Jews are still escaping from France into Switzerland every day. He estimated that there are 20,000 Jews among the 60,000 refugees who have found asylum in Switzerland. They include 1,800 Jewish refugees who succeeded in escaping to Switzerland from the parts of Italy now held by German troops. These are mostly Italian and Yugoslav Jews.
