The anti-Semitic front in Argentina received further support today with the government’s appointment of Admiral Leon Scasso as Federal Intervenor in the Cordoba province. Admiral Scasso is known for his violent anti-Jewish, anti-British and anti-United States speeches.
Reports reaching here today from Argentina reveal that a Jewish delegation has appeared before the Buenos Aires authorities asking for protective measures against possible anti-Jewish riots planned by pro-Nazi groups. It is feared that such riots will take place next Tuesday during the first complete blackout in the city. Unofficial inquiries to this effect are reported to have been made also by the U.S. Embassy in Buenos Aires. The authorities are said to have assured the Jewish representatives that proper measures will be taken to check any anti-Jewish demonstrations.
Taking no chances, Jewish institutions in Buenos Aires have stationed special guards around their buildings prepared to resist any provocations. Especially guarded are the synagogues, the Jewish hospital and the buildings of the Jewish daily newspapers which were recently closed down by order of the Argentine authorities but later reopened as a result of President Roosevelt’s protest.
