Official Jewish circles here have given considerable thought to the situation of the 140,000 Jews of Algeria in the current military-political crisis which grips that country. At the moment there is still no news of the Jewish position since direct communications between France and Algeria have not yet been restored. The Algerian Jews are all French citizens.
Political opinions among Algerian Jews are known to vary as widely as among other elements of the population. The attitude of the military government in Algeria toward Jewish affairs, it is felt, will vary depending upon whether Lt. Gen Raoul Salan or Brig. Jacques Massu is actually in control. The former is pictured as being “pro-Jewish” in his attitude, while Gen. Massu may have a negative attitude toward towards the Jews, it is felt. In the past, extreme rightist elements in Algeria have either been indifferent toward the Jews or negative.
