“The Jews in Hungary lead an actively Jewish life and are being helped by the Hungarian Government in their efforts to do so,” Professor Alexander Scheiber, director of the Hungarian Rabbinical Seminary in Budapest declared at a press conference here today. Prof, Scheiber is the first official representative of the Jewish community of Hungary to come to the United States since World War II.
“Our synagogues,” he reported, “are well attended and our Jewish institutions, particularly of scholarship, enjoy a wide reputation. In addition to the 86-year-old Rabbinical Seminary, we have a Jewish high school and many Hebrew schools.” While in the U.S., Prof, Scheiber had observed the work of the World Council of Synagogues. As a result, he said, he would urge the organized Jewish community in Hungary to seek affiliation with it.
