A campaign to raise $250,000 to construct a new synagogue in this city was launched here, sponsored by the Chief Rabbinate. The drive was undertaken as a result of the increase in the Jewish community in Istanbul which now numbers 50,000. Permission for the new synagogue was granted by the Turkish Government.
A campaign to restore the synagogues that were used during the war as military bases by the authorities is also under way. The project envisages the repair and renovation of ancient houses of worship that date back to the Byzantine era.
