The Central Committee of Jewish Refugees in Italy and the Union of Jewish Communities in Italy have cabled protests to President Truman and U.N. Secretary-General Trygve Lie over America’s abandonment of the U.N. Palestine partition decision.
“The U.S. withdrawal from the historic decision of the U.N. regarding Palestine signifies a heavy blow both to the United Nations and to the Jewish people in the most tragic moment in its struggle for existence,” the message to Truman declared. “The Jewish refugees appeal to you — do not commit an act towards the most unfortunate of all people that might cast a dark shadow on the conscience of the American people.”
