An estimated 50 countries throughout the free world participated in the 1959 observance of the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising, the World Jewish Congress reported today.
Dr. Isaac L Schwartzbart, director of the WJC Organization Department, said he hoped that the number would be exceeded on April 24 this year, which will be the 17th anniversary. The date has been fixed by the Knesset, Israel’s Parliament, on 27 Nissan.
He also disclosed that a proposal for a worldwide essay contest to create a Megillah for the murder of the 6, 000, 000 Jews of Europe by the Nazis had been referred by the Israel Prime Minister’s office to Yad Vashem, the official agency for the commemoration of the European holocaust. He added that he expected the Executive of Yad Vashem to act favorably on the proposal.
