The movement of Montreal Jews toward the western suburbs of the city, discernible by 1951, has continued unabated and has spread from what was a former narrow strip within the city to a far wider area, it was revealed here by a population study carried on under the auspices of the Canadian Jewish Congress. The total number of Jews in Montreal this year is estimated at 96,000.
The movement of Montreal Jews to new areas of the city has brought with it a corresponding movement of synagogues, schools and recreational facilities. Of 16 new synagogues built in the suburbs in the past five years, only four were established by new congregations. The remainder were set up by congregations whose members had moved to the newer residential areas.
