The few hundred Jews remaining in Munich held their first Rosh Hashonah services since 1938 yesterday and today in a hall on Herzogmax Strasse, one of the city’s principal thoroughfares. During the services the president of the revived Jewish community spoke briefly, reviewing the sufferings undergone by the Jews of Germany and expressing the hope that happier days lay ahead.
In Hamburg, whose pre-war Jewish population of 25,000 has been reduced to a few hundred, the survivors held the first New Year services in seven years, the Hamburg radio announced. In many other cities of the Reich, Jewish chaplains of the U.S. Army cooperated with the surviving local Jews to hold services in synagogues where such were available, or in public halls.
