Gov. Robert B. Meyner signed into law this week end absentee registration and voting procedures designed to permit Jews and others to participate in state and local elections by mail when an election conflicted with a religious holiday.
The measure, drafted and sponsored by the American Jewish Congress, amended the state’s voting code which previously allowed absentee registration and voting only in the case of illness or physical disability. Gov. Meyner’s signing of the bill, which had the support of all rabbinical bodies in the state, was hailed by Sam Brown, executive director of the AJC New Jersey region.
