The Jews in the quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem who have been virtually cut off from the rest of the city for the past few weeks today presented demand for the immediate lifting of the Arab siege by British forces to the District Commissioner of Jerusalem and the local British military commander.
Mordechai Weingarten, chairman of the quarter’s community council, also asked the officials to guarantee that traffic to and from the area to kept free of interference by the Arabs and that an adequate supply of essential materials be kept flowing into the district. The Britons premised to consider the demands. The district commissioner, who brought some white bread into the besieged quarter for distribution among the inhabitants, also promised to enable Jewish residents of the district who were caught outside it when the siege began to return to their homes.
