The Jewish population of Palestine was called on today to abstain from using sugar and edible oils for one day each week, in order that these commodities may be sent to the several hundred thousand Polish-Jewish refugees who are now living in Russia.
Speaking at a press conference here, Elihu Dobkin, chief of the Jewish Agency’s immigration department, voiced this plea, at the same time revealing that 4,500 parcels of food and clothing valued at about $250,000 have already been dispatched to the refugees. He added that another 2,100 parcels would be shipped next week.
Mr. Dobkin also announced that a special group composed of the Jewish Agency, the Joint Distribution Committee and other organizations has been established to organize relief for these refugees. He said that M. Passman, a representative of this new group, is leaving for Teheran to supervise the shipment of the food and clothing.
