Russian Jewry’s apparent continued interest in Jewish activities–religious and cultural–seems to give the lie to the Government’s official position that Jewish institutions in the USSR are dying for lack of adherents, Senator Javits of New York told a news conference here today.
The Republican Senator, who returned last week from a ten-day visit to the Soviet Union, asserted that “every evidence” he saw or was told about, pointed to the fact that Jews are attempting in as many ways as possible to perpetuate Jewish life.
Senator Javits said that one conclusion of his visit to the Soviet Union was that a Jewish culture could flourish there if the Government relaxed its restrictions.
