Jews in the former Soviet republic of Uzbekistan overwhelmingly supported the re-election of incumbent President Islam Karimov, according to sources in the capital of Tashkent. Karimov has maintained friendly relations with the local Jewish community. Prior to the vote, the Sephardi synagogue in Tashkent offered prayers for his victory.
