A number of Jews in the town of Zastavne, province of Bukowina, have been sentenced to jail for keeping their stores closed on Saturdays, which the government regard as being against the law. The local kehillah has lodged a protest with the Bukowinian ministry against these arrests, pointing out that compelling Jews to trade on the Sabbath is against the constitution which guarantees the freedom of the Jewish religion.
The Jewish Morgenblatt of this city also reports that several public schools in Czernowitz have installed the numerus clausus for Jewish children for the new school year. The paper protests against this discrimination, saying it violates the Jewish minority rights as guaranteed by the Versailles treaty.
