The exact effect of the Brazilian government’s announcement of yesterday, that it was planning to bar all immigration from Europe for six months to solve the unemployment crisis, on Jewish immigration is not yet known. It is not expected, however, that the gates will be closed to relatives of immigrants already here and to those with sufficient capital to maintain themselves.
Between 1,500 and 2,000 Jewish immigrants are coming to Brazil every six months. The total Jewish population of the country is about 40,000.
