The sudden death of Sir Austen Chamberlain, 73, staunch anti-Nazi and defender of the Jews, brought sorrow to Jewish circles here tonight. He was one of Great Britain’s great statesmen and former Foreign Minister.
In 1934 he declared that all the best elements in the world stand with the Jews in the face of the assault of Hitlerism upon them and asked the German people “where they expect to stand in the council of the world… if Israel in Germany is to suffer new captivities?”
In regard to the Jewish national home in Palestine, he felt the most delicate task of the British Government was “to balance the interests of the two peoples in Palestine.”
