Two Jews and two organizations of large Jewish content were honored by The Nation, weekly magazine, on its 1934 Honor Roll, announced yesterday.
The individuals singled out were John L. Spivak, contributor of a series of articles to the New Masses on anti-Semitic manifestations in this country, and John Wechsler, editor of the Columbia Spectator.
The organizations, both of the theatre, were honored for individual productions, the Group Theatre receiving its citation for “Gold Eagle Guy,” by Melvin P. Levy, and the Theatre Union for “Stevedore,” by George Sklar, and “The Sailors of Cattaro,” by Dr. Friedrich Wolf, exiled German-Jewish author.
“Gold Eagle Guy” was directed by the chief director of the Group Theatre, Lee Strassberg, and its principal role is taken by Edward Bromberg. Other Jews in the cast include Stella Adler, Morris Carnovsky, Bob Lewis and Luther Adler.
