The Jews, as a race or a group, are not to blame “for our rush toward Europe’s latest war,” the New York Daily News said today in an editorial entitled “Anti-Semitism in this country.” William Allen White’s Committee to Defend America by Aiding the Allies, the most active single agency “pushing us toward the war,” lists very few Jews on its roster, the editorial said.
“One favorite anti-Semitic theory is that the Jews control most of the department stores, which do most of the big display advertising in the papers, and that thereby the Jews dictate the paper’s editorial policies on foreign affairs,” the editorial went on. “As far as this newspaper is concerned, its publisher is prepared to testify under oath before any kind of Congressional committee that no advertiser has ever, directly or indirectly, tried to influence its editorial policies on foreign affairs.”
