Jews of America Must Give Amply to Aid Palestine, Dr. Adler Says

Dr. Cyrus Adler, president of the Jewish Theological Seminary, upon his return from abroad, where he attended the sessions of the Jewish Agency at Zurich, declared that the British government was exerting every possible effort in its power to restore order and put down the disturbances, and that its word may be relied upon by the Jewish masses that it will carry out its intentions. The representations of Dr. Weizmann, Lord Melchett and Mr. Warburg have elicited the promise of the government that reparation for the damages caused in Palestine will be made. “We must accept this evidence of good will as the intention of the British government to do whatever it can to repair the damage wrought.

“The Jewish community, on the other hand, will not lie down because of this unprovoked disaster. The Jewish community has never given up any undertaking in which justice and right is their cause. It is for us to resolve that the sacrifices of our co-religionists shall spur us on in the work undertaken by the Jewish community of the world in Palestine. The immediate and pressing need calls upon the humane sentiments and feelings of all Jews, irrespective of party, to bring succor and assistance to the stricken and those in want. Jewish generosity and humanity will again make its demonstration to the world. But to make known the distress and the suffering which the Jews of Palestine are exposed to should be sufficient to bring a universal Jewish response. The Palestine emergency fund should be in immediate receipt of voluntary and spontaneous subscriptions from the Jewish community of the United States in abundant and generous measure. The need is real. Suffering and hunger confronts thousands. The Jews of America must give amply and fully to this appeal,” Dr. Adler declared.

A telegram expressing sympathy was received by the Federation of Polish Jews in America from Tadeusz Marynowski, Polish Consul in New York. The message read:

“In this, the hour of your great sorrow and bereavement, resulting from the most regrettable incidents in Palestine, I am taking the liberty of requesting you to convey to the Federation of Polish Jews in America my sincere condolences as well as the expressions of my deepest sympathy with the people of your race who have been subjected to such unspeakable terror. I am certain that the entire Polish nation is voicing the same sentiments and that it has been greatly aroused in their indignation against the horrible outrages in the ancient homeland of the Jewry of the world.”
