Jewish communities in the Republic of Lithuania took an active part in the celebrations yesterday of Lithuania’s Independence Day.
Special services were held in the synagogues, where memorial services were arranged for the Jewish soldiers who lost their lives in the struggle for Lithuania’s independence. Two representatives of the Jewish community of Kovno. Mr. Ozinski on behalf of the Kehillah and Mr. Rubinstein on behalf of the “Yiddishe Stimme,” Kovno Yiddish daily, participated in a radio program broadcast by the Government.
Mr. Rubinstein in his address expressed the hope that the Lithuanian Government will fulfill her obligations to the Jewish population.
Praise for the patriotism of Lithuanian Jews was expressed by General Nageviczus, chairman of the general celebration committee, at the official banquet at which he gave a toast in honor of Lithuanian Jewry.
A painful impression, however, was left by the action of the police who tore down the pictures of the former Ministers of Jewish affairs, Rosenbaum and Soloveitchik which were displayed by the Ezra Society alongside the pictures of Lithuanian leaders.
