A minimum quota of $50,000 for the Allied Jewish Campaign to be raised from the thousand Jewish families of North Carolina was the goal decided upon at a conference of representatives of every Jewish community in the state, which was held in Raleigh before the advent of Rosh Hashanah.
Addressed by Morris Rothenberg, one of the national chairmen of the Allied Jewish Campaign and by the Hon. Josephus Daniels, former Secretary of the Navy, and leading figure in American journalism and public affairs, the delegates were aroused to a high pitch of determination for the cause.
J. L. Emanuel of Raleigh was chosen state chairman, with Lionel Weil of Goldsboro and Julius Cone, of Greensboro, honorary chairman. (As vice-chairmen, the conference elected Harriss Newman, Wilmington; Miss Gertrude Weil, Goldsboro; Louis Samuels, Raleigh; Moses Shapiro, Winston-Salem and S. Sternberg, Ashville.) Mrs. Emil Rosenthal of Raleigh was elected secretary and Dr. Nathan Rothstein of Durham, treasurer.
