The rabbis of the Jewish community in Tetuan have lifted the rigorous discipline of Yom Kippur to permit the Jewish population of the town to leave the synagogue and welcome King Alphonso on his visit to the town on Thursday, October 6th.
In issuing this permission, the rabbis declared that it is a part of Jewish tradition to show respect to the earthly rulers. It was stated that failure of the Jewish community to welcome the king might have unfavorable results.
