Jews have played an important role in the successes of the Red Army, participating activity in front-line units and in guerrilla bands, Soviet Ambassador Andrei Gromyko said last night, addressing a dinner arranged by the Ambijan Committee as part of its national convention.
” Among the outstanding military leaders of the Soviet Union are many Jews,” the Ambassador continued. ” A talented son of the Jewish people, Hero of the Soviet Union Army General Cherniakovsky, is now conducting all military operations against the citadel of German militarism, East Prussia. Among the soldiers and officers of the Red Army, among the guerrilla heroes fighting in the Nazi rear, there are many Jews who defend with their lives their right to live and work, and who are avenging themselves upon the enemy for the brutalities of the Nazi-German troops on occupied Soviet territory.”
Mr. Gromyko, stressing that” in the Soviet Union there is no problem of minorities, ” said that ” it was natural that the more developed republics and regions of the country should assist the Autonomous Jewish Region of Biro-Bidjan.
Messages lauding Ambijan’s activities in support of Jewish settlement in Biro-Bidjan and in caring for Jewish war orphans were received from Vice-President Henry A. Wallace, Secretary of State Edward R. Stettinius, Jr., Secretary of the Interior Harold L. Ickes, and Supreme Court Justice Frank Murphy.
