Slovakia’s Jewish community has protested against the Parliament’s choice of an alleged anti-Semitic journalist to be involved in the council that operates the state radio network.
Jewish leaders said they want the recent nomination of Maros Puchovsky, editor of the anti-Semitic weekly Zmena, to be revoked.
The leaders said the newly elected Parliament’s choice for the Broadcasting Council, which required a majority vote, would allow the anti-Semitic press to have a powerful role in the operation of the state radio network.
In the January issue of the Prague Jewish monthly Rosh Chodesh, journalist Jaro Franek wrote that Zmena and the daily Slovenska Republika, which also prints anti-Semitic articles, had become favored publications of the governing parties in Slovakia.
Prime Minister Vladimir Meciar recently visited the editorial officers of Zmena for the publication’s fifth anniversary celebration.
