Jewish personalities absented themselves from last night’s concert in honor of tomorrow’s wedding of Crown Princess Juliana and Prince Bernhard zu Lippo-Biestorfeld because of the decision to play the “Horst Wossol Liod.”
Dr. Peter Van Anrooy, noted orchestra leader, refused to conduct the band in the playing of the Nazi anthem, explaining he would never lead such a song because it was aimed at Jews and others opposed to Nazi views.
The Nazi anthem was conducted by Captain Boer, leader of the Royal Military Band, Dr. Van Anrooy returning to conduct the remainder of the concert.
