Jews throughout the world are rallying to Israel’s support in the current crisis with immediate and increased financial contributions, it was revealed here last night at a meeting of the Jewish Agency executive. Zalman Shazar, acting chairman of the executive, just back from a trip abroad, gave the Zionist leaders a picture of political and moral as well as financial support for Israel among Jews in other countries.
Eliahu Dobkin told the executive that 500,000 pounds sterling ($1,400,000) has already been transferred from South Africa on account of the Israel drive there and that the Joint Palestine Appeal, which opened its annual drive four months earlier and upped its goal, has already raised 320,000 pounds ($896,000). Canada has transferred $1,000,000 on account of its regular campaign. Other, smaller communities, have also increased their contributions, he said, citing the case of the Jews of El Salvador who jumped their regular $15,000 contribution to $85,000, nearly a six-fold increase.
The executive decided to convene within two weeks a meeting of the Small-Zionist Actions Committee, one of the policy-making bodies of the world Zionist movement.
The Joint Palestine Appeal held today an extraordinary meeting of leaders of the organization from all parts of the country to lay plans for an emergency 2,500,000 pound ($7,000,000) campaign for Israel. The campaign, to be launched immediately, will replace the 1957 drive which was scheduled to commence next February.
The conscience of the world demands that a real peace treaty be negotiated and signed by Israel and the Arab states and plans be laid for the eventual development of “harmonious relations” between Israel and the Arab states, R. N. Carvalho, president of the Anglo-Jewish Association, declared here last night at an AJA meeting. He declared that “all of us have been deeply impressed with the skill and valor of Israel’s troops and appalled at the magnitude of the arms supplied Egypt from behind the lron Curtain.”
A mass meeting of Austrian Jews, sponsored here by the Zionist Federation of Austria, expressed solidarity with Israel and formed a broad communal committee to raise funds for Israel. Dr. Emil Maurer, president of the Vienna Jewish Community appealed to Austrian Jews to tax themselves to give the largest possible contributions to Israel.
More than 1,000 persons crowded into Stockholm’s Great Synagogue last night at a rally called by the Jewish Community and the Zionist Federation of Sweden. Gunnar Josephson, chairman of the community, said that all Swedish Jews, regardless of political orientation, agreed that Israel must be protected.
A resolution expressing Argentine Jewry’s “complete identification” with Israel was adopted here today at a two-day meeting of the Argentine Zionist Assembly composed of delegates of all Zionist groups in the country. The session was called by the Zionist Central Council to set up machinery for an Argentine. Zionist Federation.
