Undersecretary of State for Religions, Moldavanu, declared to a representative of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency today that the order to execute the Jewish Communities Ordinance will not be put into effect without the consent of the authorized Jewish representatives.
How far the order of Moldavanu is an improvement over the ordinance of Minister of Fine Arts, Aurel Vlad, it will be possible to establish only after the order is published, but it is clear that the difficulty over the Kehillah unity ordinance, adopted in August, 1929 at the suggestion of Minister Vlad, will not be overcome. Every town will have to establish three various communities—Orthodox, Reform and Sephardic. The utmost improvement to be hoped for is that the creation of more communities will be avoided.
Because the ministry has not yet sanctioned the communities ordinance before publishing the order of execution, the Bucharest community has decided to organize Kehillah elections for the third of March. It has submitted to the government a draft of statutes which do not include compulsory community taxes nor the incorporation of the “Hevrah Kadisha,” and which retains the right of plural voting.
