The Washington Jewish community will hold a “Christmas Open House for the Homeless” on Christmas day at the Luther Place Lutheran Memorial Church and provide services in areas normally staffed by Christians on that day, the Rev. John F. Steinbruck, the pastor, announced yesterday. Members of the church have provided services on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, such as standing vigil for Soviet Jewry opposite the Soviet Embassy and participating in support of Soviet Jews.
Steinbruck, a familiar figure at the Soviet Embassy vigils, noted “a tradition of mutually supportive cooperation has been growing in recent years between Jewish and Christian communities” and that as “an integral part of their Christmas observance,” members of his church will also attend the Soviet vigil on Christmas day.
