A decision to celebrate the recent ruling of the Czernowitz court against the Minister of Public Worship and in favor of the autonomous existence of the Jewish Community, was adopted today by the Jewish Community here.
The celebration is intended to serve as a lasting memorial so that posterity may remember how the autonomy of the Jewish Community in Czernowitz was secured, leaders declared today.
At the same time, officials of the Jewish Community announced today that they will not consider themselves responsible for the tax debts incurred by the government commissioner during the period of his regime. The government commissioner was appointed by the Minister of Public Worship to administrate the affairs of the Jewish Community here immediately after the dispute between the Community and the Minister started.
The debts incurred during the government commissioner’s regime amount to millions of lei, it was disclosed today. These debts have endangered the existence of the entire Jewish Community of this city.
The government commissioner was appointed when the Minister of Public Worship deprived 11,000 Jews in Czernowitz of their franchise by changing the Community’s election laws.
