Jim McKay, the sports broadcaster acclaimed for his coverage of the massacre of Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics, has died.

McKay died of natural causes at his Maryland home Saturday, the ABC network said. He was 86.

A veteran of ABC television, he is best remembered for declaring “They’re all gone” when word came of the killing of 11 Israeli athletes at the hand of Palestinian terrorists.

McKay won two Emmys for his coverage of the 1972 Games, which included an unbroken 16-hour stretch reporting the hostage crisis. He later described it as the most difficult thing he had ever done.
