The Jewish National Fund today issued a review of its tree-planting activities in connection with Chamisho Osor be-Shvat, the “new year of the trees,” which occurs on Feb. 12.
The colony of Hulda is now mechanically pressing 27 tons of olives annually by mechanical means, providing 2,000 man-days of work and marketing nine tons of oil, besides disposing of three-and-a-half tons of table olives. The industry is important in reducing present and future imports. Shade trees have converted the mountain settlement into a Summer resort, supplementing foreign holiday places.
Emergency conditions have enhanced the value of timber from JNF forests. Sale of industrial timber yielded £1,000, besides fuel sales. Tree-planting provided the bulk of wages and income at Kfar Hachores and other hill settlements pending maturation of their fruit trees.
