Joan Crawford, noted motion-picture star, was honored this week-end by the officers of the United Jewish Appeal for devotion to the work of the UJA. A silver-mounted Bible was presented to her by Rabbi Herbert A. Friedman, UJA executive vice-chairman.
Inscribed in the Bible is the following citation: “The United Jewish Appeal take pleasure in presenting this Hebrew-English Bible, published and adorned in Jerusalem, to Joan Crawford in recognition of her humanitarian response to the needs of the people in Israel and distressed Jews overseas.”
In making the presentation, Rabbi Friedman said that Miss Crawford’s efforts in behalf of newcomers to Israel and of Jewish men, women and children in trouble in other parts of the world “have been of great inspiration. Your concern is typical of the warm heart of Americans who responded to calls for help, whatever the source.”
Miss Crawford declared, when accepting the Bible, that “my interest in recent years in the Bible has grown. I shall always treasure this Bible, coming as it does, as a gift from a great humanitarian, life-saving organization that gives practical meaning to the Biblical injunction that we should be charitable.”
