John D. Rockefeller. Jr. made his second large contribution to a Jewish cause within six months when he sent $50,000 to the Federation for the Support of Jewish Philanthropic Societies, which, with other donations announced sent the federation’s drive above the $4,000,000 mark. Mr. Rockefeller’s previous gift was $100,000 to the United Jewish Campaign last May.

Accompanying the gift, which was submitted through the Special Prospects Committee, of which Henry Morgenthau is chairman and E###H. Bernheim, associate chairman, was a letter in which Mr. Rockefeller said:

“I have observed with growing civic pride the efficient centralized plan of financing the ninety-one Jewish philanthropic agencies in New York which have been in operation for some years past. Of course, these agencies deal with an ever-increasing portion of our city’s population and do so with intelligence and discretion.

“It is my pleasure to offer $50,000 toward the fund which is now being raised and which deserves success.”

In his letter of thanks Sot M. Stroock, President of the Federation, said:

“It would be difficult for me to express adequately our sincere appreciation of and gratitude of this very generous gift. Equally do we appreciate the commendation of our methods of work expressed in your letter, and we trust that the results achieved through the federation and its affiliated societies may always be such as to justify the approval and support of men so deeply interested in the welfare of our community as you have shown yourself to be.”

Announcement of the contribution was made by Frederick Brown. General Chairman of the campaign, at a dinner meeting of councilors and division heads of the campaign at the Harmonie Club. Additional subscriptions amounting to $694,182 were announced, bringing the total to $4,011,789, or slightly more than $700,000 short of the $4,720,000 goal.

Among the larger contribution announced were $25,000 from Murry Guggenheim; an additional $5,000 from David A. Schulte, making his total subscription $20,000; $10,000 from Ludwig Vogelstein. $9,400 from Berthold Rothschild and $5,000 from Mrs. Isabella Friedman.

It was announced that under the leadership of Mrs. Isaac Kubie, Associate Chairman of the Women’s Division, Federation Tithe Day was to be observed by several stores which have announced their intention of giving 10 percent of a day’s profit to the drive.

The general committee of the United Jewish Campaign for Brownsville. Pa. and surrounding towns held a meeting at the Temple O’Have Israel at which plans were laid for carrying on the work of raising Brownsville’s quota.

The committee decided on $5,000 as the goal to be reached for this community.
