I wish to extend to my fellow citizens of the Jewish faith my sincerest greetings and best wishes for a happy and prosperous New Year. At such a time when the thoughts of all are turned towards the higher and the unselfish things of life, it is most fitting that they remember those of their faith who are not so happily situated as are we in the United States, especially those who, because of a situation over which they have no control, have been prevented from joining their dear ones in this country and from celebrating their holidays as united families. I feel sure that you will remember in your prayers to ask a blessing upon our country and that those who are or are about to become responsible for its government may be guided by wisdom and humanity. Pray also that they preserve for the future as in the past the principle of freedom of worship and belief and that they discourage every effort made by individual or organization to inject into our civic or political life any question or race, creed or color.
