President Lyndon Johnson attended funeral services for Justice Felix Frankfurter held at Frankfurter’s apartment this afternoon. Abba Eban, Deputy Foreign Minister of Israel, was also present at the funeral services.
Pursuant to a request made by Justice Frankfurter before he passed away, his former law clerk, Prof Louis Henkin of Columbia University Law School, recited the Kaddish at the service. It was pointed out that the prayer was recited not because of religious dogma but to symbolize the traditional kinship Justice Frankfurter felt for his Jewish heritage. No rabbi participated because of Mr. Frankfurter’s desire not to be formally identified with Judaism as a religious creed. A moving eulogy was offered by Prof. Paul Freund.
