Eric Johnston, President Eisenhower’s special envoy to the Middle East, is “reasonably optimistic” about the possibility of Arab-Israel acceptance of the American-sponsored regional water development scheme, according to Secretary of State John Foster Dulles.
Ambassador Johnston leaves for the Middle East next week for his fifth visit to the area in the capacity of the President’s special negotiator on development of the Jordan River Valley. Secretary Dulles, at his weekly press conference, said that Ambassador Johnston feels that Arab-Israel differences have been narrowed down sufficiently to enable him to bridge the differences. Mr. Dulles said this optimistic viewpoint is Mr. Johnston’s own estimate of the situation.
