Dr. Jonah B. Wise, spiritual leader of the Central Synagogue here, was honored this week-end upon his completion of 50 years of service as a rabbi. The 73-year-old rabbi, son of Isaac M. Wise, founder of Reform Judaism in this country, indicated in a sermon to the congregation that he has no intention of retiring at this time.
During the ceremony honoring him, he was presented with a special citation by Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, which was founded by his father, and where he himself was ordained in 1904. Besides holding rabbinical posts in Chattanooga, Tenn., Portland, Oregon, and here, Dr. Wise was active in helping save a remnant of German Jewry and in organizing and leading the United Jewish Appeal.
