State Department sources said today that the United States had obtained assurances from Jordan that American arms sent to Jordan would be used for defensive purposes only. State Department spokesman Lincoln White stressed that it was implicit in the understanding with Jordan that the arms were not intended for use against Israel and that the U.S. had no feeling whatsoever that American arms supplied to Jordan would be used against Israel.
Israel Ambassador Abba Eban, who returned yesterday to Washington from consultations in Israel, will formally inform Secretary of State John Foster Dulles of the views of the Israel Government on the American position on Syria as stated by Mr. Dulles last Saturday following a White House conference. He will confer with Mr. Dulles tomorrow.
The discussion with Secretary Dulles will also include other matters affecting Middle Eastern peace, economic burdens imposed on Israel by the arming of its neighbors, issues before the United Nations, and various other problems.
