Jordan today charged Israel with “polluting” the waters of the Jordan River while Jordanian Minister Yusif Haikal asked Assistant Secretary of State George C. McGhee to bring about the intervention of America at the United Nations on behalf of Jordan on the river complaint.
The Jordanian Minister said that he informed Mr. McGhee that Israel was depriving the Jordanian people of badly-needed water by diverting and polluting the Jordan. He said “this hampered the resettlement of Arab refugees and jeopardized the survival of many residents of Jordan.”
Diplomatic sources here believe that the Jordanian action is part of a propaganda move calculated to instigate a United Nations ban against Israel development projects which are connected with the Jordan River. The Jordanians, it is said, hope to impede Israel development work as part of the Arab economic warfare against the Jewish state.
