King Hussein of Jordan has invited all the Arab States to participate in a “summit” conference next month to plan a united defense against Israel, according to Amman dispatches. His invitation was accepted immediately by Syria. The Lebanon and Iraq and was being considered by Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Egypt, it was stated, held reservations because of Iraq’s adherence to the Baghdad pact.
Iraq, however has offered Syria and The Lebanon “any military aid they ask” in the event that Israel resumes work on the Jordan River development plan. It has also offered to supply Iraqi troops. Iraq, as a member of the Baghdad pact, is receiving military aid from the United States, receiving one arms shipment only last week.
The State Department at Washington has repeatedly taken the position that arms given to Iraq would not be employed against Israel.
