The Jordan Government has urged Palestine Arab refugees in Jordan territory to stop filing applications for the recovery of their funds blocked in Israel, it was reported here today from the Old City of Jerusalem. It also urged the British banks acting as Israel’s agents in this matter and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency to refuse to accept any applications filed by the refugees. Israel has agreed, unilaterally, to release 1, 000, 000 pounds of refugee assets.
The Jordan Government’s action resulted from protests by some refugees who charged that the applications provided for the signing of stipulations releasing Israel of further legal responsibility on the funds. The refugees also charged that 10 percent of their funds had been taken by the Israel Government under the terms of its compulsory loan of all bank accounts, and that all funds in excess of 500 pounds in any refugees account had been turned over to the Israel Custodian of Absentee Property.
