The Jordanian Cabinet has rejected an application from the 400 Samaritans living in Jordan territory requesting that they be recognized as an independent religious community, it was reported today from Amman.
The Samaritans, congregated in the Nablus area, have lived in the same area since the days of the Kings of Israel and have achieved historical recognition for their strict observance of the injunctions of the Torah. Next week, some 120 Samaritans living in Israel will cross the Jordan lines to join the other Samaritans for the traditional Passover sacrificial observance on Mount Gerizim.
