Jordan complained to the Security Council today that Israel is planning to violate the Jordan-Israel Armistice Agreement by preparing to hold a “military parade in the city of Jerusalem and to show their military equipment and heavy arms.”
In a letter from Abdul Monem Rifai, Jordan’s Permanent Representative here, to the president of the Council, the Jordanian Government asserted that Israel’s plans for a military parade in Jerusalem violate not only the 1949 Armistice Agreement but also “defy” a Security Council resolution of 1961 in which the Council had requested that no show of military might be put on in Jerusalem.
Mr. Rifai noted in his letter that he had already complained to the Security Council on this issue last week. He did not call for a meeting of the Security Council on the matter but requested only that his letter be circulated as an official document. Since 1961, Israel has been conducting its annual Independence Day military parade in other cities outside Jerusalem. Last year’s parade was held in Beersheba.
