The first consignment of grapefruit raised along the Jordan Valley, where the climate easily ripens fruit, has been shipped to England and other countries on the continent by the HYT, sales export combine of Hamashbir, Yachin and Thenuvah. The current citrus export season is well under way.
Last year more than 250,000 cases of grapefruit were exported and next season’s exports are estimated at half a million cases. Grapefruit was first raised in the grove of Abraham Bril, an official of the Palestine Jewish Colonization Association, at Ness Ziona in 1912. Exports started in 1929.
